The view from Boot Hill and a couple of enclosed graves.

The old mining town of Jerome is located in the mountains of northern Arizona at 5,200 feet. The town of 450 people is now a tourist town where visitors can see it much as it was during its mining days in the 1920's.

We were drawn to the town on a geocaching adventure which included a traditional geocache called " Los Dias del Muerto en Jerome". This is the old miners graveyard.  We dubbed it Boot Hill. It could be a western movie set. It is located on a hill east of the town and offers a beautiful view of the entire area. The grave markers that we could read have dates from 1897 to 1942 and are in English, Spanish and Italian.

As you search for the cache you will notice that many of the graves are surrounded by a metal rail fence and/or completely encased in concrete. We speculated that the ground there is so hard and rocky that it is difficult to impossible to dig deep enough to keep animals from digging up the bodies. Some of the sites look like they are maintained, with clean readable headstones. Others are only marked by old wooden crosses which may or may not have had some writing on them. Still others have nothing at all. It's a very forlorn place and a stark reminder of Jerome's violent and dangerous past.

Since Jerome is known as "The Largest Ghost Town in America", the town is teeming with ghost stories. Boot Hill is no exception. It is said to haunted by footsteps, distant voices and dark figures. We found this cache in broad daylight and didn't see  any dark figures that may have been watching us. The cache would be an easy find at night. The GPS coordinates are right on and there's not much cover. All you have to do is walk all the way to the far back corner. What are you waiting for?

The GPS coordinates for trailhead parking at the entrance to Old Miners are 34.753099, -112.104771.  The geocache is at the other end of the graveyard. Click on the coordinates to bring up an interactive Google Map.
